What Is Citrix?

What Is Citrix?

Citrix Systems, Inc. is a software company headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Citrix produces solutions that allow users to run enterprise applications using “thin client” technology. This allows for applications to run on a server, and end users to run the applications on nearly any computer or mobile device without having software (besides Citrix) installed on their device.

Citrix products like XenApp, XenDesktop, and Citrix Workspace are widely used in healthcare IT environments. These solutions enable medical professionals to access patient data, EHR systems, and the desktops of remote computers from anywhere. Any combination of product offerings from Citrix Systems, Inc. is often referred to as “Citrix environments".

The History of Citrix

Citrix was founded in 1989 and first gained notice with its Multiuser and Multi Win enterprise solutions. Multiuser allowed users to run applications hosted on a remote computer running OS/2, and Multi Win later added the same functionality to Windows PCs.

The company later released the first version of MetaFrame, a complete enterprise application and remote desktop solution. MetaFrame enabled the “publishing” of applications on a local or remote network. As the applications run on the server, the client computers don’t need to be especially powerful—much like a terminal connecting to a mainframe computer.

System administrators have found many uses for MetaFrame and Citrix’s subsequent products, such as remote access and software license management.

Citrix in Healthcare IT

Citrix products have proven especially suited to the healthcare industry. Medical software like EHR systems is made available to the devices and users that need access. This simplifies implementations, as applications don’t have to be installed on hundreds or thousands of computers.

Security policies are also enforced with Citrix, by controlling the devices that can access applications or remote computers. Admins can then focus on security at the data center level, reducing the attack vectors hackers could use to access sensitive information like protected health information (PHI) or clinical trial data.
