What is Continuing Medical Education (CME)?

What is Continuing Medical Education (CME)?

Continuing Medical Education (CME) involves activities that support professional development among physicians and others in the healthcare industry. These professionals invest in CME, increasing their knowledge and skills. The aim is to provide comprehensive, quality care while improving business practices.

Defining Continuing Medical Education (CME)

According to the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the definition of CME is broad. It focuses on continuing educational activities, resources, and support that assist physicians in performing their professional responsibilities more efficiently and effectively.

What Are Some Examples of CME?

CME covers continuing education activities directly linked to physicians' professional work.

Examples include:

  • Management: For physicians who are responsible for managing a healthcare facility.

  • Educational methodology: For physicians teaching students in a medical school.

  • Practice management: For physicians who want to provide better service to patients.

  • Coding and reimbursement: For professionals in a medical practice.

The Link Between CME and EHRs

Electronic health records (EHRs) help healthcare professionals and providers achieve smarter spending and better, more efficient care — especially when CME is integrated into EHRs.

EHR processes can improve care delivery, clinical problems, and security. CME courses and associated experts are helping professionals maximize the potential of EHRs and electronic medical records (EMRs)

So, while EHRs show great promise, they do require some skills and knowledge to increase productivity, improve care, and save money — which is why this self-paced course has become so popular in recent years.

The American Medical Association (AMA) Ed Hub offers the EHR CME course, designed for physicians and other professionals who would benefit from EMR management, covering topics like critical care medicine, pediatrics, surgery, family medicine, etc.

For example, when aiming to improve care delivery, this course offers insight into patient charts and EHR configuration as part of the AMA EHR workflow learning series.

Other CME Courses to Consider

The EHR CME course is just one example, as there are many options to meet each user's interests, goals, and state requirements.

In addition to the EHR CME course, many are interested in:

IPAs and CME Opportunities

Based on the value of continuing education, some Independent Physician Associations (IPAs) are providing CME opportunities.

In some cases, they offer training sessions and courses. Others keep members updated on the latest industry advancements and best practices. Larger IPAs may even hold conferences to shine a light on CME options.

These options often focus on the most relevant or pressing topics — changing to reflect what's happening in the industry. For example, topics like artificial intelligence or diversity and inclusion are more relevant today than a decade ago.
