Founded by Edward J. Gerner and Harold E. Smalley in 1961, HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) was first named the Hospital Management Systems Society. Over the years, the organization changed its name and moved its headquarters to Chicago, Illinois. As a nonprofit, it is a US 501(c)6 organization. HIMSS has seen enormous growth and change as it has expanded its realm of influence to a more global healthcare audience. HIMSS vision is to "realize the full health potential of every human, everywhere."
