What is the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)?

What is the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)?

CMS is the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which is the agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that administers federal healthcare programs.

This federal agency assists in providing health insurance through Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Besides administering major healthcare insurance programs, CMS also collects and analyzes data for use in research reports. These reports support CMS’s efforts to improve healthcare systems, wellness programs, and access to healthcare.

The History of CMS

After President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare into law in 1965, the program was administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) under the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW). Then in 1977, the federal government established the Health Care Finance Administration (HCFA) under the HEW. In July 2001, the HCFA was renamed the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

CMS is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, and has ten regional offices throughout the US. These are located in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, Kansas City, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, and Seattle. There are also offices located in the US territories of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

Throughout its history, the scope and function of CMS have expanded to cover a wide range of federal healthcare-related agencies and programs.

In addition, to managing these healthcare programs that affect the lives of more than 135 million enrolled Americans, CMS oversees quality in clinical laboratories and long-term care facilities.
