The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical (HITECH) Act revolutionized the HIT community by providing funding and metrics for the "meaningfully use" of an Electronic Health Record (EHR). Through the use of standardized metrics and incentives through Medicare and Medicaid, the HITECH Act expanded the use of digital records. After multiple stages of meeting "Meaningful Use" requirements, providers were later either incentivized or penalized based on their performance.
What is The HITECH Act?
The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act was passed as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) in 2009. They designed the HITECH Act to incentivize medical and health providers to adopt healthcare technology to accelerate the growth of America's national healthcare infrastructure.
A part of that acceleration was in response to data privacy and security concerns, which remain important to your practice. It also hoped to improve patient outcomes by reducing overtreatment and medical errors.
What Does the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act Do?
The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act gives authority to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to launch programs that are designed to improve the efficiency, quality, and safety of healthcare.
The purpose of the HITECH Act is also to promote the use and proliferation of health information technology, which includes electronic health records (EHRs). One of our goals at TempDev is to help you better capitalize on EHR features and functionality, so you can better serve your patients.
